Ford C-Max Hybrid Gets EPA Rating Of 47 mpg, Energi Does 85 ...

Ford made two performance and efficiency related announcements about its C-Max range of Eco-friendly vehicles. The C-Max Hybrid and the C-Max Energi. An announcements which is full of comparisons with Toyota?s Prius hybrid models.

The C-Max Energi, according to Ford, has the highest top speed in the industry for a hybrid vehicle in electric only mode. The Energi is capable of reaching 85 mph, which is more than 20 mph the Prius can do in EV mode. The Energi also beats the Prius in the max power output delivered, which is 195 horsepower for the Energi and 188 horsepower for the Prius. The Energi betters the Prius even in both the overall and electric only range by 10 miles and by nearly 15 miles respectively.

The driver can get all the available electric power from the vehicle with just the press of the EV button which comes in three three different modes.

?In EV: Auto mode, the vehicle automatically takes advantage of plug-in charge,? said Kevin Layden, Ford director of Electrification Programs and Engineering. ?When the charge is depleted, C-MAX Energi operates as a full hybrid.?

The powertrain computer automatically selects the appropriate blend of battery usage and engine usage based on demand and the state of battery charge.

In EV: Now mode, the vehicle operates in EV mode using plug-in power. The gasoline engine will not operate unless an override setting is selected or certain conditions are present such as the accelerator pedal being fully depressed and the driver enabling the gas engine. EV: Now also activates a special Manage EV screen to monitor functionality.

To achieve the EV range estimate shown on the corresponding gauge, drivers are given coaching cues to maximize EV mode. Additionally, use of climate power and energy gauges will further help drivers manage vehicle energy use.

The EV: Later setting saves plug-in power for later use, like transitioning from highway to lower-speed residential neighborhood use. C-MAX Energi operates in normal hybrid mode, using both gas engine and electric motor. Plug-in power is reserved until the driver switches to the EV: Now or EV: Auto setting. ?

Coming to the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid, it has now been certified with an EPA rating of 47 mpg, be it city or highway or both combined. This once again is bests the Toyota Prius V by 7 miles. However, the standard Prius Liftback version is still better with a range of gets 51 mpg in the city , 48 mpg on the highway and 50 mpg combined.

C-Max Hybrid is currently available in select Ford dealerships starting at a base price of $25,995. The C-Max Energi will be made available by this fall for 19 states and by early 2013 for the rest of the country.
