Terrestrial Hermit Crabs Learning Social Tricks
An anonymous reader writes "When it comes to abandoned snail shells that hermit crabs expropriate as mobile homes, size matters, for room to grow, room for eggs, and protection from predators. UC Berkeley evolutionary biologist Mark Laidre found that terrestrial hermit crabs on the Pacific shore of Costa Rica congregate in aggressive swap meets where one crab is forced from a relatively large shell, whereupon the rest trade up (one loser and multiple winners, pretty good odds). The loser gets the smallest shell, which means likely doom. Laidre and his colleagues note that most hermit crabs live in the ocean, where there are usually enough abandoned shells to go around so most can live, well, hermit-like lives without much interaction with fellow crabs. Not so on land, at least in Costa Rica."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The man who presided over Britney Spears' life during her well-publicized meltdown is portraying himself in court as a benevolent personal manager who saved her from ruin.
Sam Lutfi was to finish his direct testimony Wednesday and face cross-examination by a battery of lawyers for the singer's parents and conservators. They are fighting a multimillion-dollar lawsuit by Lutfi, who claims he was defamed by Lynne Spears in her book about her daughter.
He also said he was promised 15 percent of the millions of dollars that Spears earned during their association.
Spears' mother portrayed him as a Svengali-like figure preying on Britney's vulnerabilities. Lutfi said he was actually a peacemaker, reuniting Britney with her mother after a long estrangement.
He said the superstar implored him to become her personal manager after she had fired her entire staff.
Under questioning by his lawyer, Lutfi said Spears asked him to be her personal manager in June 2007, about a month after they met and struck up a conversation at a nightclub.
Lutfi described the singer at that time as being "in crisis mode."
"She was very distraught," he said. "She was having a child custody battle and was in the middle of a divorce." He added she also had drug problems.
He was reluctant to become her manager, he said. "I told her I had no experience as a manager for someone of her caliber. I wanted time to think about it."
But Lutfi said Spears pressed him, saying: "Sam, do you know what this job pays?"
"She said, 'I'm getting $800,000 a month even when I'm not working. You will get 15 percent of that,'" he recalled.
Lutfi said he accepted the job with conditions, insisting that Britney allow him to put together a new "varsity team" consisting of a lawyer, agent and business manager.
"And I wanted her to promise me to stay clean," he said, noting he brought drug-sniffing dogs to Spears' home, where they found a baggie full of a white powder.
He said she promised and he flushed the powder down the toilet. He said he then took control.
"I took charge of dealing with the press. I acted as a liaison between Britney and her child custody attorneys. I interfaced with her record label and video producers. I helped her choose artwork for her album and merchandise."
Lutfi said he negotiated a peace pact with paparazzi who dogged her every move, giving them access to her schedule if they would follow at a safe distance and save her a parking space at her destination.
Once, he said, he and Britney traveled to Las Vegas to see if she could find a venue for a permanent performing spot.
But he said by September, the singer had relapsed on drugs, and he walked out. On Oct. 1, 2007, he said, "Britney called me from her car and asked me to come back and help her kick drugs."
Lutfi said Spears had been parked all night outside a tanning salon in a mini mall, where he found her and took her home. He said he moved into her house after that, although there was no romantic relationship.
Through all of this, he said he had no written management contract nor was he ever paid.
In her book, Lynne Spears refers to him during that period as "the gatekeeper," ''the general" and "Svengali."
In a passage of the book read by the judge outside the jury's presence, Lynne Spears wrote: "He lorded over me that he had complete access and I had no access to my own child."
Lutfi, wearing a suit and black-rimmed glasses, spoke in a businesslike manner as he described his increasing role as intermediary in the star's career and private life.
He said he broached the subject of her estrangement from her parents and arranged for a reunion for Britney and her mother. Jurors were shown a photo of the two women meeting and smiling.
He also said he approached her father about a meeting, but he declined.
The star's parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, have been in court every day. After Britney was hospitalized for mental illness, her father became her conservator, an ongoing arrangement.

Apple iMac (2012) hands-on!
Look out, world -- Apple just unleashed its latest iMac, and we agree that it might just be the biggest leap in the platform since we left Bondi Blue. It's hard to overstate just how phenomenal this machine looks in the flesh. It's also unbelievably thin -- we'd be impressed if it were simply a new Cinema Display, but the fact that a computer is in there really takes it over the top. At $1,299, you'll be hard-pressed to find a sexier all-in-one (assuming you don't need an inbuilt optical drive, of course). Have a look at the eye candy below; we'll be spending a fair amount of time with this guy in the weeks ahead.

Iran hangs ten drug smugglers: report
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran hanged 10 people convicted of drug trafficking on Monday, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported, part of what rights group Amnesty International called a "state killing spree".
Executions are regular events in Tehran, and the latest took place in a prison in the capital. The judiciary said those hanged were members of two drug smuggling gangs, Mehr said.
Iran invariably dismisses criticism from Western human rights groups over its high rate of executions, saying it is implementing Islamic law and responding to a major drugs problem.
Last week, Amnesty urged Iranian authorities to commute all death sentences and remove the penalty as a possible punishment. The London-based human rights watchdog said in a statement it believed 344 people had been executed in Iran since March.
Iran is a transit route for narcotics smuggled from neighboring Afghanistan, which produces more than 90 percent of the world's opium, the raw ingredient of heroin.
According to the country's media, more than 3,500 Iranian soldiers have been killed in clashes with drug smugglers since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
Among those executed on Monday was Saeed Sedighi, who Amnesty said "appears to have had no opportunity to appeal against his conviction and sentence".
In a statement later on Monday Amnesty condemned the executions, saying they were part of a "state killing spree".
"While Iran's security forces have a right to prosecute individuals for offences connected to the production and supply of illegal drugs, drugs offences do not meet the threshold of 'most serious crimes' to which the death penalty must be restricted under international law," Amnesty's statement said.
Murder, adultery, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and apostasy - the renouncing of Islam - are all punishable by death under the Islamic judicial code that Iran adopted after the revolution.

Offsetting global warming: Targeting solar geoengineering to minimize risk and inequality
ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? A new study suggests that solar geoengineering can be tailored to reduce inequality or to manage specific risks like the loss of Arctic sea ice. By tailoring geoengineering efforts by region and by need, a new model promises to maximize the effectiveness of solar radiation management while mitigating its potential side effects and risks.
Developed by a team of leading researchers, the study was published in the November issue of Nature Climate Change.
Solar geoengineering, the goal of which is to offset the global warming caused by greenhouse gases, involves reflecting sunlight back into space. By increasing the concentrations of aerosols in the stratosphere or by creating low-altitude marine clouds, the as-yet hypothetical solar geoengineering projects would scatter incoming solar heat away from Earth's surface.
Critics of geoengineering have long warned that such a global intervention would have unequal effects around the world and could result in unforeseen consequences. They argue that the potential gains may not be worth the risk.
Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. "Instead, we can be thoughtful about various tradeoffs to achieve more selective results, such as the trade-off between minimizing global climate changes and minimizing residual changes at the worst-off location."
The study -- developed in collaboration with Douglas G. MacMartin of the California Institute of Technology, Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution for Science, and Ben Kravitz, formerly of Carnegie and now at the Department of Energy -- explores the feasibility of using solar geoengineering to counter the loss of Arctic sea ice.
"There has been a lot of loose talk about region-specific climate modification. By contrast, our research uses a more systematic approach to understand how geoengineering might be used to limit a specific impact. We found that tailored solar geoengineering might limit Arctic sea ice loss with several times less total solar shading than would be needed in a uniform case."
Generally speaking, greenhouse gases tend to suppress precipitation, and an offsetting reduction in the amount of sunlight absorbed by Earth would not restore this precipitation. Both greenhouse gases and aerosols affect the distribution of heat and rain on this planet, but they change the temperature and precipitation in different ways in different places. The researchers suggest that varying the amount of sunlight deflected away from Earth both regionally and seasonally could combat some of this problem.
"These results indicate that varying geoengineering efforts by region and over different periods of time could potentially improve the effectiveness of solar geoengineering and reduce climate impacts in at-risk areas," says co-author Ken Caldeira, Senior Scientist in the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science.
The researchers note that while their study used a state-of-the-art model, any real-world estimates of the possible impact of solar radiation management would need to take into account various uncertainties. Further, any interference in Earth's climate system, whether intentional or unintentional, is likely to produce unanticipated outcomes.
"While more work needs to be done, we have a strong model that indicates that solar geoengineering might be used in a far more nuanced manner than the uniform one-size-fits-all implementation that is often assumed. One might say that one need not think of it as a single global thermostat. This gives us hope that if we ever do need to implement engineered solutions to combat global warming, that we would do so with a bit more confidence and a great ability to test it and control it."

A new video showing extra downloadable content for the upcoming Electronic Arts first person shooter Medal Of Honor: Warfighter has been released.
Developed by Danger Close Games, MOH: Warfighter is the direct sequel of the series reboot Medal Of Honor and the fourteenth entry in the long running franchise.
Six different classes will be available to choose: Assaulter, Sniper, Point Man, Heavy Gunner and Spec Ops.
Gameplay will also use a fire team system where teamplay will be encouraged.
The expansion will be called Zero Dark Thirty Map like the 2012 movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow.
Two maps will be included in the expansion: the first one will take place in Darra?s weapons market, a tribal area where tribe leaders rule and police forces can?t enter.
It?s the perfect place to hide since no one from the outside can enter the village.
The second map will be called Chitral, a place where Bin Laden hid for some time: it?s a hard to reach mountain zone because of the roads and the snow which falls for many months a year, definitely another grood place to hid from your enemies.
The Zero Dark Thirty Map pack will be free for all preorders, everyone else can buy the pack for 7,00 ?.
Ps3, Xbox 360 and Pc versions of Medal Of Honor Warfighter will hit shelves on next week: October 23 in the US, October 25 in Europe.

An NOPD motorcycle officer was taken?to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after crashing into a car?Saturday evening. The officer had several abrasions, a knee injury?and may have broken an ankle, said Officer Garry Flot, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department.
The accident happened at the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Lyons streets at about 7 p.m.
The motorcycle and the car collided as the officer, with his lights and siren on, tried to pass as the car was turning? left?off Tchoupitoulas onto Lyons.
The driver of the car was not injured, Flot said.
No citations have been issued, but the facts of the case will be sent to the district attorney's office for review, as is standard protocol for such incidents.

Gun industry thrives during Obama's term in office
WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has presided over a heyday for the gun industry despite predictions by the National Rifle Association four years ago that he would be the "most anti-gun president in American history." Gun buyers fear that Obama wants to restrict their purchases, especially if he were re-elected.
An analysis by The Associated Press of data tracking the health of the gun industry shows that sales are on the rise, so much that some gun manufacturers can't make enough guns fast enough. Major gun company stock prices are up. The number of federally licensed, retail gun dealers is increasing for the first time in nearly 20 years. The NRA is bursting with cash and political clout. And Washington has expressed little interest in passing new gun laws, despite renewed calls to do so after recent deadly shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin.
Obama has made no promises to impose new gun control legislation and doesn't have the support in Congress or among voters even if he did. During this week's presidential debate, Obama suggested renewing a U.S. ban on assault weapons and coming up with an overall strategy to reduce violence, but both Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said the government needs to enforce gun laws already on the books.
"The driver is President Obama. He's the best thing that ever happened to the firearm industry," said Jim Barrett, an industry analyst at C.L. King & Associates Inc. in New York.
Tennessee lawyer Brian Manookian said he never considered himself a gun enthusiast like others in his state. He owns only one handgun. But the firearms industry has proved so lucrative for him that he's enthusiastic now. Manookian and his business partner, Gary Semanchik, opened a $5 million firearms retail and training complex in September in Nashville.
Inventory is selling three to four times faster than they expected since the facility opened.
"It is a very strong investment," Manookian said.
Others agree. For the first time since 1993, the number of federally licensed retail gun dealers in the U.S. increased slightly in 2010 and 2011, as the country added 1,167 more licensed retail gun dealers, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives records. After the assault weapons ban in 1994, the number of gun dealerships dropped annually until 2010. As of October 2012, there were 50,812 retail gun dealers ? that's 3,303 more than in 2009.
"Business has been very good," said Frederick Prehn, who a year ago opened a small gun store above his dentistry practice in Wausau, Wis. In the past year, Prehn has relocated twice to larger spaces and gone from one employee to eight.
Some gun store owners can't keep shelves stocked, said Brian Jones, owner of Bullseye Shooter's supply in Painted Post, N.Y. Jones said he opened his gun store in November 2010. In his first year, Jones said he sold between 600 and 700 guns. A little more than halfway through his second year, he's already sold 700.
For the first time in the company's history, Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. stopped taking orders for a couple months this year. Ruger, one of the nation's largest gun manufacturers, has since resumed taking orders, though gun-sellers say demand is still outpacing production.
Obama is not yet through his first term, but the federal government already has conducted about as many background checks for gun owners and prospective buyers on his watch as it did during the first six years of George W. Bush's presidency. In the first 3 1/2 years of the Bush administration, the FBI conducted about 28 million background checks. During the same period of the Obama administration, the FBI conducted more than 50 million. The gun industry uses the number of background checks on gun owners as a reliable indicator of demand.
Ruger and Smith & Wesson represent nearly 30 percent of the U.S. gun manufacturing industry and lead the market in production of pistols and revolvers, according to government statistics. The two companies have been running production lines around the clock, hiring workers and operating at maximum capacity, said Barrett, an industry analyst who also owns Ruger stock.
Ruger's sales have increased 86 percent since Obama took office, and Smith & Wesson's sales have gone up nearly 44 percent, compared with 18 percent for overall national retail sales.
And the companies have big expectations for the industry's future, as they're spending more money on research and development than ever before.
"Wouldn't you want to be in a business where customers are just begging to hand you money?" said Bill Bernstein, owner of East Side Gun Shop in Nashville, Tenn.
The NRA itself has done well, too. The lobbying organization has had more cash on hand during the Obama years than it did since 2004, finishing 2010 with more than $24 million, according to the most recent figures available.
"Which makes it incredibly ironic that the gun lobby is opposing Obama," said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Gross said Obama, who initially campaigned to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired under Bush, has done what he said was "disappointingly little" on gun control.
But the gun lobby says the success of the industry does not indicate that Obama is good for Second Amendment rights.
"This is the most dangerous election in our lifetimes," NRA chief executive officer Wayne LaPierre said in February, a point he's made regularly during the NRA's campaign to defeat Obama.
The NRA stands by its 2008 predictions that Obama would be anti-gun. NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam noted Obama's appointment of two Supreme Court justices whom the NRA considers anti-gun, plus Obama's support of a United Nations arms trade treaty and the botched gun-walking operation called Fast and Furious, which the NRA believes was concocted as part of a plan to enforce new gun restrictions.
"Gun owners and hunters fear that a second Obama administration with no future political campaigns to worry about will try to destroy this great American freedom," Arulanandam said.
It is hard to find a single aspect of the gun world that isn't thriving.
Fears of a Democratic president taking office and issuing stricter gun control laws led to an initial spike in gun sales in 2008, giving gun dealers some of the highest profit margins they've ever seen. But even after it became clear Obama was not going to make gun control a priority as president, the industry has continued to do well.
Fear of crime may be driving some sales. The number of violent crimes rose by 18 percent in the U.S. in 2011, according to Justice Department figures released this week. It was the first year-to-year increase for violent crime since 1993, marking the end of a long string of declines.
Firearms sales typically increase during poor economic times, said Steve Sanetti, chief executive officer and president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association for the industry. More Americans are hunting and shooting for recreation as well, he said. Sanetti attributes that to military servicemen and women with firearms experience returning to civilian life and wanting to keep up with shooting as a pastime. He also said recreational shooting is a relatively cheap and accessible hobby, drawing in new buyers.
Voters have made clear that gun control isn't a priority. A recent AP-National Constitution Center poll found that 49 percent of adults felt laws limiting gun ownership infringe on the public's right to bear arms, while 43 percent said such laws do not infringe on those rights. After the recent mass shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, 52 members of Congress sponsored a bill to track bulk sales of ammunition, but the legislation went nowhere.
Bernstein and others attribute some of the industry's success to all but one state ? Illinois ? offering permits to carry a concealed weapon. In some cases, people have been buying guns because they're afraid of the day they won't be able to.
"Any gun owner might fear that," said Justin Paulson, a 22-year-old grad student in Nashville who recently purchased a handgun from Bernstein's store. Paulson said he's been collecting guns since he was 18. He's currently up to 16. He purchased his most recent handgun because he thought the one he had was too small to defend himself. And the timing of his purchase was deliberate. "Chances are things might be a little tighter in terms of control come November," he said.
Fears about new gun laws mean dollar signs for the gun industry.
Bernie Conaster, owner of Virginia Arms Co. in Manassas, Va., has doubled the size of his suburban Washington gun store, hired more employees and paid bonuses since Obama has been in office.
"I certainly don't want to stoke the fire," said Conaster, "but I'll ride the wave while it's here."

Mindblowing Mentality
The evidence for stockmarket investor bias is overwhelming. We are so not rational when it comes to our stocks that the thought that there are still researchers out there trying to develop theories based on the idea that we actually think through what we do is somewhat mindblowing.?However, you?d expect that if we?re strangely biased when it comes to financial transactions involving the stockmarket that we might also be a bit slanty-brained when it comes to other asset classes as well.? And as real-estate is probably the biggest single investment any of us will ever make it?s probably a prime candidate for a bit of behavioral analysis.
Sub-Prime Stretched
The interaction between real-estate and other asset classes was well exemplified by the most recent bust, as poorly managed sub-prime mortgages fed through into the wider markets and economy resulting in an economic convulsion we?re still feeling the effects of.? In fact since 1970 there have been around 25 booms and subsequent busts in developed economies, as discussed by Luca Agnello and Ludger Schuknecht in Booms and Busts in Housing Markets, who find that these movements are related to short-term interest rates, the general availability of credit and mortgage market deregulation.? Basically if you make it easier to borrow people will, and all too often they?ll borrow more than they?re able to repay when times get a bit tougher.
This behaviour immediately signals that there are some underlying biases here ? the lack of foresight in taking on debt at a stretch which you can?t repay when things get harder is a typical failure to discount the future properly, a tendency we?ve seen in reverse in retirement investing where people also fail to prepare for the future.? Given this you?d expect that the literature would be full of evidence about the behavioral ineptitude of property investors but, in fact, it?s rather limited in this regard.
Losses in Helsinki
A couple of years back we looked at the history of property rights and the likely behavioral implications in Property Rights and Wrongs, and the more recent research suggests that the indications there were correct.? The same behavioral flaws that impair our judgement on the question of stocks are equally relevant to real-estate pricing.
Mikko Eini? and Markku Kaustia in Price Setting and the Reluctance to Realize Losses in Apartment Markets?have shown a range of peculiar things occurring in Finnish real-estate, over and about that nation?s peoples? addiction to long summer holidays in cabins far out in their beautiful countryside. ?Amongst other things they suggest that the results are consistent with the unconscious application of our old friends loss aversion and mental accounting.
Loss aversion is perhaps the key behavioral bias of all ? pretty much the original finding of the founding fathers of behavioral finance, Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman, was that people simply hate taking a loss.? They?ll sell their winners to lock-in a gain, even if they?re selling something which will probably keep on going up (and by-and-large they do), and they?ll hold onto their losers in the hope of making back their gains (and by-and-large they don?t).? Losses cause regret and hurt twice as much as gains, and avoiding them is a powerful instinct (see Loss Aversion Affects Tiger Woods, Too).
Round Numbers and Mental Accounts
Eini? and Kaustia make a number of interesting, and rather odd, observations: there are an inordinately large number of sales at zero capital gains, for instance, with the data suggesting that people are waiting long times to obtain their desired prices, suggesting that they?re very unwilling to realize a loss.? There are also a large number of sales at gains of 25%, 33.3% and 50%, an indication perhaps of people locking in their gains or maybe the well known tendency of people to find round numbers highly salient (see: Irrational Numbers: Price Clustering and Stop Losses).

Mental accounting is another powerful behavioral bias, an idea proposed and popularized by Richard Thaler.? The concept is simple ? we tend to form separate mental accounts for our money which we then manage separately.? We might, for instance, be better off taking a loss on our condo and investing it into the booming Mongolian stockmarket than hanging on and waiting to break-even and miss the emerging market opportunity of a lifetime.? However, mental accounting mitigates against this, forcing us to hang on to our collapsing condo and meaning we lose out twice ? once because we lose more on our property than we need to and a second time because we?ve lost our Far Eastern gains (see: Mental Accounting: Not All Money is Equal).
Disposed to Profit
Again the researchers suggest mental accounting may well be playing a part in their participant?s thought processes:
?We find that a large number of apartments are sold exactly at the purchase price. These zero-return observations form an important part of the general loss realization aversion pattern. The results are consistent with the idea that sellers are trying to break even in their mental accounting, framing the purchase as a gain or loss in relation to the original purchase price.?
In particular the research shows a jump in the willingness to sell when a property moves into positive territory, which we?d expect given previous research in this area.? Interestingly, though, this is an effect net of transaction fees ? which suggests that people may be biased, but they?re not stupid.
All Mavened Up
Given that the evidence for these common behavioral biases seems to be quite strong in real-estate transactions we might also expect other familiar friends to appear when we start looking at the boom-bust behaviour of property markets.? A likely suspect would be herding, the tendency of people to follow each other rather than thinking for themselves.? In Mimetic Herding Behavior and the Decision to Strategically Default Michael Seiler, Mark Lane and David Harrison certainly seem to find evidence that the decision to post back the keys is linked to herding:
?We find that homeowners are easily persuaded to follow the herd and adopt a strategic default proclivity consistent with that of their peers. Herding behavior is stronger when a maven, or thought leader, is involved and weaker when the person finds strategic default to be morally objectionable.?
Mimetically Speaking
The invocation of Mimetics ? the predisposition to learn by repeating observed behaviour ? offers a explanation of why we abandon our own beliefs in order to follow someone else?s; it?s a biologically evolved response to situations of uncertainty.? The ideas that a real-estate expert can influence default decisions and that the defence against it is dependent on feelings of moral obligations are both fascinating and worthy of more analysis.? However, the overall finding that herding is a factor in real-estate behaviour, both for professionals and the rest of us, is both suggestive and indicative.
Of course, anyone who spends time looking at and thinking about behavioral bias can find it pretty much anywhere they look.? That?s both a strength and a weakness, because anything that explains everything probably explains nothing.? But if you do want a an explanation of why real-estate booms and busts get out of hand then starting with cheap money and adding a dose of behavioral economics will probably get you a long way.

Earth-size planet found just next door, in Alpha Centauri system

A habitable planet could well be among them, some astronomers speculate.
The planet, with an estimated mass 1.13 times higher than Earth's, is orbiting Alpha Centauri B, which forms a binary pair with Alpha Centauri A. Both essentially share the sun's mass and are only slightly older than the sun. The system includes a smaller, dimmer star called Proxima Centauri.
With a "year" that corresponds to 3.2 Earth days, the newfound planet is too close to the star to be habitable, notes Xavier Dumusque, a PhD student in astrophysics at the University of Porto in Portugal. He led the team reporting the discovery in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.
The planet is gravitationally bound to the star in such a way that it presents the same face to Alpha Centauri B all the time. This sets up temperatures on the day side that could top 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit, melting rock ? a sharp contrast with the night side, perpetually facing the cold of space.
Still, researchers point out that rocky planets tend to have siblings.
Evidence from 17 years of hunting planets, especially evidence that NASA's Kepler spacecraft is amassing, "shows us where there's one rocky planet, there's more," says Debra Fischer, a Yale University astronomer who has been deeply involved in hunting for extrasolar planets for most of this period.
Snagging a rocky planet with an Earth-like mass one solar system over from ours suggests that "it's a good bet there are other planets there as well," she adds, including planets orbiting Alpha Centauri A.
Detecting an Earth-mass, rocky planet in the habitable zone of either star will be extremely difficult. The notion that one of these lies a cosmically scant 4 light-years away remains speculation, but "it is not a crazy speculation anymore," says Dr. Fischer, who was not part of the research team reporting the results.
The team, which included 11 researchers from Switzerland, Portugal, and France, used the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-meter telescope high in the Chilean desert.
The researchers observed the system on and off for four years using an approach that measures the slight to-and-fro tug a planet imparts to its host star as the planet orbits. Using a highly stable spectrograph bolted to the back of the telescope, the team detected this movement as subtle changes in the star's spectrum ? which shifted toward red when the planet tugged the star away from Earth, and to blue when it pulled the star toward observers.
