iOS 7 preview: iCloud Keychain aims to make security more convenient

iCloud Keychain promises to generate, store, sync, and populate all your passwords across all your iOS 7 devices, and OS X Mavericks on the Mac.

iOS 7 adds an incredibly important set of new features to Apple's Safari web browser - the ability to generate, store, and fill passwords. Sure, there have been third-party apps that have done this, and more, for years. But when the functionality is baked into the OS, even when it's only the basest level of functionality, there's a greater chance that more people will use it. And more people really need to use a password manager, and the unique passwords they enable. Yes, it's security week on Talk Mobile, so there's no better time to talk about mobile security, and passwords.

Here's what Apple has to say about iCloud Keychain:

iCloud Keychain. Lots of things you do on the web require passwords. Now iCloud can remember your account names, passwords, and credit card numbers for you. And Safari will enter them automatically whenever you need to sign in to a site or shop online. It works on all your approved iOS 7 devices and Mac computers running OS X Mavericks. And with 256-bit AES encryption, it?s highly secure.

Password Generator. Every time you create an account, you can have Safari generate a unique, hard?to?guess password. And remember it for you.

Apple only mentioned iCloud Keychain in passing during WWDC 2013's iOS segment; they gave it much more attention during the OS X Mavericks segment. However, they did announce that it'll work on Safari on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad just like it does on the Mac.

iOS 7 should provide the same functionality, namely:

• The ability to generate strong, unique passwords, ensuring no two websites or services are the same.
• The ability to store the passwords so you don't have to remember them.
• The ability to sync the passwords to your other iOS devices, or to your Macs.
• The ability to autofill your passwords so you don't have to type them in.
• The ability to store and fill credit card information.

It's almost impossible for we mere humans to create truly random passwords - the mix of numbers, letters, and symbols that create something hard to guess and not subject to simple dictionary attacks. Having the operating system create, if not truly random, then pseudo-random-enough passwords ensures something that's not predictable or easily guessed.

Since trying to remember passwords leads to short, oft-repeated passwords, storing them securely is a must as well, as is syncing them to other devices. Unlike 3rd-party password apps which can support non-Apple platforms, however, iCloud Keychain only syncs to Apple devices. If that's all you use, that's fine. If not, you may not find it as useful. However...

On iOS, no third-party apps can integrate with Safari, like they can via extensions on the Mac. That means third-party password apps have to build in their own browsers. For some people, that's not an issue. For others, Safari is the browser they want to use. If that's the case, then even if you're multi-platform, iCloud Keychain could be an important secondary password management tool. If third-party apps are allowed to or figure out how to sync with iCloud Keychain as well, it could be an excellent secondary tool.

Likewise with storing credit card information. Given that entering passwords and payment information on mobile in general, and the iPhone and iPad in specific can range from annoying to infuriating, autofill is incredibly convenient. Convenience comes at a price, however. With third-party password apps, you typically need to enter a passcode or master password before it "unlocks" the rest of your passwords.

Apple hasn't really shown off what protects your passwords in the iCloud Keychain system yet. Is there a Passcode on master password? Does it use the device passcode or is there a separate way to unlock iCloud Keychain. If not, how can you lend someone your device, when they could login to any of your services or use any of your payment systems? Or if someone gets access to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, what stops them from getting access to all your credentials?

Perhaps the oft-rumored thumbprint reader will play a roll in this, and will add a second factor to the defensive depth of the system. Perhaps not. Right now, the user experience part of the system looks fantastic, but a lot about the security remains under NDA, and to be seen once it's in the wild and getting hammered on.

That'll happen when it ships as part of iOS 7 this fall. In the meantime, let me know - do you currently plan to use it?

Cancer agency criticism switches to Greg Abbott

Recent controversies at CPRIT may come back to haunt Attorney General Greg Abbott as he runs for governor.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's oversight ? or lack thereof, as some are saying ? of the state's cancer agency has come into question now that he is running for governor.

Abbott has served on the governing board of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, the state's $3 billion cancer agency, for four years and appointed a deputy to attend meetings for him. The appointee missed about a third of CPRIT's Oversight Committee meetings, the Houston Chronicle reports.

While criticism of Abbott's role with CPRIT is new, the agency has gone through a controversial year. Governing officials at CPRIT were blasted late last year after it was revealed an $11 million grant was awarded to Dallas-based Peloton Therapeutics Inc. without going through proper review channels.

As a result, a moratorium was placed on CPRIT grants in December, bringing the agency to a standstill. An investigation by Abbott's office subsequently followed. Only recently was the agency allowed to fulfill 25 researcher recruitment grants worth about $72 million.

Critics question Abbott's ability to objectively investigate the agency after it was discovered serious issues needed to be addressed when it was his office that oversaw CPRIT to begin with, the Chronicle reports.

Meanwhile, recent leadership changes could bolster public trust in the institute.

Teachers Leverage Digital Tools to Improve Teens' Writing

Digital communication is ingrained in the lives of high school students. Text messaging is typically their go-to mode of communication. Teens use Facebook to keep up with friends, and tweet about everything from YouTube videos to what they had for lunch.

While these mediums blur the lines between formal and informal communication, overall they have a net positive effect on high school students' writing skills, according to a report released last week by the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project.

Teens are more creative, collaborative and willing to share their work thanks to these digital tools, the report notes. The tools also make life easier for teachers.

Half of the nearly 2,500 teachers surveyed for the report say the Internet and digital tools make it easier for them to teach writing - particularly with tools like interactive whiteboards and blogs.

"Students take a closer look at their writing when they know that the audience will include their peers," wrote one of the teachers, whose students post their work to Raw Ink, an online community with close to 1,300 members that is hosted by students at Indiana's Silver Creek High School.

Blogs, discussion board posts, videos and photos posted to this site are seen by teachers, students and contributors from across the country, so students pay more attention to what they put on the site, the teacher noted.

The Pew survey tapped middle and high school teachers working primarily in public schools. Many of the educators lead honors or accelerated courses, and would be considered "leading edge teachers," according to the report.

Teachers reported having students edit their school's Wikipedia page, create online polls and collaborate on projects using Google Docs. Several of the teachers surveyed said they require students not only to blog, but to also give feedback to their peers via the blog's comment features. This creates an efficient feedback loop in which students feel comfortable weighing in on their classmates' work, the teachers noted.

Posting on a public forum also allows students to get input from outside the classroom, which can have a greater impact than hearing from their peers or teachers, one teacher noted.

"I had a student share that a pastor from somewhere in the country had commented on her blog. She was beyond ecstatic to read that someone thought her work was excellent," the teacher wrote. "I can and do tell her that all day long, but when she hears that from someone else, she is convinced."

CAIRO?The family of Egypt's ousted president lashed out at the military on Monday, accusing the generals of kidnapping Mohammed Morsi, who has been detained incommunicado in an unknown location for nearly three weeks.

New violence erupted around protests by Morsi supporters demanding his reinstatement, killing at least four people. Pro-Morsi protesters marched near Cairo's Tahrir Square, battled with Morsi opponents camped out in the square, trading stones and gunfire, while further clashes erupted in a city north of Cairo.

The statement by Morsi's family at a Cairo press conference underlined the unknown fate of Egypt's first freely elected president. Morsi has not been seen and has had no known contact with lawyers,

family or supporters since the military ousted him on July 3 after mass protests nationwide demanding his removal.

Since his ouster, the Islamist leader has become a tool for both sides. The new military-backed government has used Morsi to put pressure on his Muslim Brotherhood, launching criminal investigations without actually bringing charges against him. Government officials have said only that he is safe, is well cared for and is being held for his own protection.

The Brotherhood, in turn, has sought to drum up sympathy by saying Morsi's detention shows the military's coup is taking the country into dictatorship, as it tries to expand street protests demanding he be reinstated as president.

European Union foreign ministers on Monday called for the release of Morsi and "all political detainees," saying it was among their key priorities for Egypt's new leadership. The United States has also urged Morsi's release. Along with Morsi, at least five other senior Brotherhood figures are in detention.

At Monday's press conference, Morsi's daughter Shaimaa read out a statement by the family, saying, "We hold the leaders of the bloody military coup fully responsible for the safety and security of the president."

One of Morsi's sons, Osama, described his father's detention as the "embodiment of the abduction of popular will and a whole nation," and said the family will "take all legal actions" to end his detention.

"What happened is a crime of kidnapping," said Osama, who is a lawyer. "I can't find any legal means to have access to him."

He said that the family met with Morsi for the last time on July 3, shortly before military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi announced the president's ouster. Since then, they have had no contact with him.

On Monday, the state-run Al-Ahram daily splashed on its front page claims of a new investigation against Morsi, though the prosecutors' office and the military quickly denied its report.

The prosecutor-general's spokesman, Ahmed el-Rakeeb, said the report was not true and that Al-Ahram's chief editor Abdel-Nasser Salama was summoned for questioning over it, the state news agency MENA said. Military spokesman Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali in a statement accused the paper of "aiming to cause confusion and provoke public opinion."

The US Embassy in Cairo also issued a statement denying the paper report and described it as "totally fabricated and completely untrue."

On Monday, a senior Brotherhood figure escalated the group's campaign against the United States, calling on protesters to "besiege" the embassy and expel the ambassador.

Essam el-Erian, deputy head of the Brotherhood's political party said Monday, "the American role in the coup is very clear and no one can hide." He spoke at a gathering of some 100 other Islamist former lawmakers from the now-disbanded upper house of parliament, which under Morsi was the only legislative body.

Hours after, several hundred Islamists tried to march toward the U.S. Embassy, passing near Tahrir Square, where Morsi opponents have been camped out. Rock-throwing clashes erupted between the two sides, and gunshots were heard, though it was not clear who opened fire. Both sides were seen to have what appeared to be homemade pistols.

One Morsi opponent was killed and dozens of others wounded, some by birdshot and two by live ammunition, said George Ihab, a doctor at a field clinic set up by the anti-Morsi camp.

Several in the anti-Morsi camp said the protesters attacked their people guarding one of the entrances to Tahrir near a bridge over the Nile River.

"They attacked us from Qasr el-Nil Bridge with birdshot and live ammunition and molotovs," said Ahmed Korashi, whose hand was burned from what he said was a firebomb.

The Muslim Brotherhood in a tweet denied its supporters attacked Tahrir, saying its protests are peaceful.

At the same time, clashes erupted in Qalioub, north of Cairo, when pro-Morsi protesters blocked a highway between the capital and the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria, security officials said. Security forces demanded they clear the way, and protesters fired ammunition in the air. Clashes erupted with protesters throwing stones and security forces firing tear gas.

At least three people were killed in the clashes, including a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old who died from gunshot wounds, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

At the same time, thousands of Morsi supporters continued to mass outside Cairo's Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque, where they have been holding a sit-in for more than three weeks.

Security officials said the body of a 33-year-old rtextile worker, Amr Magdy Samak, was found near the sit-in with signs of torture. His body had bruises and his nails had been torn off, the officials said, adding that the death was still being investigated.

In the Sinai Peninsula, suspected Islamic militants attacked security checkpoints in the town of Sheikh Zuweyid and the nearby city of el-Arish, killing a civilian and wounding three soldiers, security officials said. The peninsula has seen an uptick in militant violence since Morsi's fall.

Apple Releases OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 4 Amid Dev Center Crisis

Apple?s Dev Center has been down since Thursday, but that isn?t stopping the company from releasing new beta software to developers.

Earlier today,?we cautioned that the hacking of the Dev Center could result in delayed updates to the iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks betas. But Apple has still pushed out the fourth developer preview of Mavericks today.

Until the Dev Center comes back online, developers won?t be able to login and directly download the new version of Mavericks. The update is only currently available in the Mac App Store for those already on a previous version of the beta operating system.

The third developer preview Mavericks came out?two weeks ago. We?ll let you know if there?s anything of note in today?s version.

Animal handler recovering from gator attack

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- An animal handler is recovering from injuries he sustained Saturday when an alligator lunged at him and chomped down on his arm while shocked spectators screamed for help.

Twenty-two-year-old Will Nace, a volunteer at the Native Village wildlife sanctuary in Hollywood, was performing tricks with the large reptile before a group of friends and family who had gathered there for a birthday party.

"It wasn't the alligator's fault," said Native Village co-owner and fellow handler Ian Tyson. "[Will found] himself in that situation. He knows that this is a wild animal that he's dealing with. He got himself into a bad spot."

Nace, who is currently recovering from his injuries at Memorial Regional Hospital, said he was never afraid of the scaly predator, even though the reptile, which is 13 feet long and weighs 800 pounds, is the largest specimen on the property. "My mind was 100 percent on getting out of his mouth," he said on Sunday night.

The handler was attempting to perform a "Lunge Alligator" demonstration, which involves him getting in front of an alligator and tapping it on the nose. Nace had been doing these shows three or four times a day for the past year, but as he approached the alligator, the beast behaved differently than in past occasions. "He ended up lunging at me before I got to his nose," he said.

"The alligator lunged out of the water ... and when this happened, he wasn't able to back himself out of the way quickly enough," said Tyson.

"My hand happened to be right in front of his face, so it lunged up, grabbed my hand and bent it backwards and bit down," Nace recalled.

"The alligator grabbed [Will] and pulled him back down into the water ... and went into what we call a death roll," Tyson continued. "They're trying to tear something off, and luckily enough, Will had enough knowledge to hold on to the alligator with his other hand and roll with the alligator."

"I held on, basically, because he decided to roll one way," Nace said. "He pulled me back all the way in the water, rolled with me. I was completely submerged underwater with him, and then by the time he came back ... out of the water, he'd let go."

The alligator broke Nace's right arm in two different places and ripped open his skin, starting from his palm all the way down to the middle of the limb. "I felt like, when my wrist broke -- I felt the bones break -- that still was not my first concern," he said. "My first concern was getting [the alligator] off me."

Tyson said the frightening turn of events doesn't surprise him. "We step into this pit knowing that that's what we're doing, that this animal can hurt us," he said.

Nace does not blame the alligator for the incident. "I just wasn't on my 'A' game yesterday," he said.

Tyson dispelled the notion that people in his line of work put themselves in danger strictly for an adrenaline high. "Once you start working with these animals, it's an education thing, trying to teach people about these animals, and the best way to do it is hands on," said Tyson.

Nace is fighting an infection in his arm and might require skin grafts.
