In the conceptual design stage of automotive styling,2D sketches, as an important tool, play a very important role for stylists to conceive the schemes.2D sketches have been widely used by stylists for their free.form styles, recording and communicating easily, much more information, etc. and they are the main patterns for the discussions of design proposals, and an important basis for creating 3D models. However,2D sketches, with the different expressions and styles, have attracted widespread attentions of stylists to effectively identify and extract the stroke features in order to improve the quality of design expression and speed up the transformation from 2D to 3D in the styling.Based on the understanding of 2D sketches and their roles in automotive styling, this paper has investigated the expressions, styles and featues of automotive sketches, and proposed a reasonable classification for the form lines of automotive features. Some typical automotive sketches have been analyzed according to the patterns of single stroke, line and surface, and light color. The features have been extracted by the experiment from the four forms:form lines, components, form shadings and non.form shadings. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been applied to deal with the experimental data. It is proved that the classification of features is right.Automotive styling can be considered as a set of features. The automotive sketches have been classified into three patterns as mentioned above from many aspects of expression tools and materials. According to the components of automotive body and the definition of styling features, the information, from the front 3/4 view, the side view and the rear 3/4 view, has been described and listed in detail. The information of features has divided into the four forms, as mentioned above, according to the method and the process of of sketching based on the definitions. The features have been extracted by the experiment. The 3D information from 2D sketches has been divided, recorded and described by using PhotoShop tools. The data from the experiments have been analyzed and validated by using the method of AHP. The specific features in the sketches have been obtained in the patterns of single stroke, line and surface, and light color. The classification of features, the experiments of feature extraction and the method of AHP have initially solved the problem of identification and extraction of features that can effectively describe the 3D information from 2D sketches. The research is very useful for the development of 3D automotive sketching system. The method and the process can be considered as the references in 3D automotive sketching.
